September and October on the Water: The Cinque Terre After the Crowds
Every year, sometime in the first week of September, the coast exhales. The August crowds thin, the queues at the ferry landings shorten, and the sea — which has been soaking up sun since June — is at its warmest of the whole year. If you can choose when to come to the Cinque Terre, this is the season we'd quietly point you toward. We say this as people who are out on this water in every month it allows: September and October are when the coast feels most like itself.
The sea is warmest when the beaches are emptiest
It surprises people, but the water in late September is warmer than in June. The Ligurian Sea holds its summer heat long after the umbrellas have been packed away, so the swim and snorkel stops that are the heart of our tours are often at their best just as the villages go quiet. You slip in off the side of Ghibli into water that still remembers August, and there's no one else in the cove. In high summer that almost never happens; in October it's the ordinary state of things.
Quiet villages, easy trains
Ashore, the shoulder season is kinder too. The lanes of the five villages belong to the people who live in them again, and the regional trains — several per hour in season — are easy rather than elbow-to-elbow. If you're staying in Levanto, you're about six minutes from our dock at Molo dei Pescatori; the short hop is covered in our guide to reaching us from Levanto. Many of our autumn guests base themselves outside the five villages precisely because getting here is so simple.
The honest part: the sea decides
We owe you the other half of the picture. Autumn weather on this coast is less settled than July's. Most days are glorious — flat water, soft light, air you can see for miles through — but fronts do come through, and when one does, we don't go out. Tommy has read this stretch of sea for forty years, and he makes the call plainly: if it's not a good day to be on the water, we say so. Because there's no prepayment and cancellation is free up to twenty-four hours before departure, a cancelled sailing costs you nothing — book again for the next fair day, or simply don't pay. Book an autumn tour early in your stay rather than on your last morning, and the weather becomes a small thing instead of a big one.
A fishing boat returning to her real work
There's one more reason autumn aboard Ghibli feels different. She is one of the last working fishing boats in Monterosso: she carries guests in summer to help protect the fish stocks, and in spring and autumn she returns to what she was built for — nets set and hauled by hand, out before dawn, the catch sold at the small market by the harbour. Sail with us in the shoulder season and you're aboard a boat easing back into her real rhythm, with a captain whose calendar is set by the run of anchovy and gilthead more than by any tourist season. The coast is quieter then. So is the boat. We think that's when both are at their best.
